Undeserving

I was caught falling,
From the safe ministry of tangled shadows,
To the down below valley of your radiance.

You became my essence and my doom,
Your body setting me afire,
While the paleness of your eyes abolishes my flames.

Your perfection anguished me, squeezed me dry of tears,
For it stood like a mountain between us,
Thrusting gushing streams of inadequacy at me.

I am not worthy of you,
With your spring-bloom lips, curving a mystery,
With your experienced hands, rugged yet tender,
With your mortal heart, pumping immortality.

I am not worthy of your love,
With my sorrowful eyes, incapable of laughter,
With my wretched pain, shredding me apart,
With my black heart, splintered and barbed.

Undeserving, I lay in you arms,
My chest confining a bubble about to rupture,
My soul carrying heavy-set gratitude,
My mute eyes preserving one final tear,
To be shed on the day this will end.
