You can try and stop this world from turning
Playing a merry-go-round with your life
Switching up and down, and down and up
Pushing up a slope padded with good intentions
Slipping and falling and never bowing out
You can try and stop time from passing
Glue yellow leaves back onto the naked boughs
Blow scattered clouds into the shape of ravens
You can hold the edge of fire between your fingers
And watch it burn and dance eternity away
You can travel this forbidden earth
From edge to muddy edge
Find everything between a spiraling cave
To a blazing desert floating in the sky
And know you have still gone nowhere
You can be a different self
In another time and a separate place
Get to keep the oyster and the pearl
To string words that will keep eternal
If only you were bold enough to speak them out
You can watch a thousand lighted candles
Glimmer out to tint the air with smoke
Forecast a day won by hard earned battle
And lost to windy dreams and to the mundane
Gone to be replaced again
