Sunset

The air is thick with burnished gold
Painting long shadows on heated sidewalks
Shifting and prancing and blindingly beautiful
Marking another day forever gone

Thirsty palm trees resemble reaching hands
Standing in long rows, a ragged reminder
Of the wealth of color a generous spring bestowed
And ruthlessly withdrew when giving way to summers heat

Flocks of birds creating a canvas of the mellow heavens
Penning an orchestra of Sonnets among the clouds
Singing of the endless journey still ahead, the weariness of feathers
And the sweet welcome of long awaited fellow dwellers of the sky

And soon the darkness,
at long last the silent death of thousands rays of light
Illuminated by dreams of sparkles dancing on the blackest water
Pierced by the distinct patter rain makes when it comes spoiling for a fight

I reach through all this organized chaos
Through thick strands of loneliness and void
Through an ocean of imagined longing and regret
To hold your hand and weather this night 'till the dawn of another day.
