You caught me mid-smile
Like catching a butterfly by the wings
And told me life's mysteries
Crudely untangling secret knots
Like happiness runs and sorrow fades
Like stars that burn the brightest
Always burn too fast
And running literary fingers down my spine
You told me love was the sweetest lie
That being with the wrong one hurts more
Than believing you have lost the right
And drinking is fair, cheating a finesse
Garnering the loss of hope is a morbid test
You said the fearful never live
That an empty heart beats the strongest
You strung words together like beads
Like a runaway train
One drink short of crashing
Colliding lives unworthy of spectators
In one beautiful mess
You blew them out of your mouth
Like white smoke in the darkness
Knowing I'll listen to your breath
